CHAPTER THREE

Les called home every evening his first week or so. He and Ron are sharing quarters for now. The third evening when he called he said that both he and Ron want to get married on Valentine’s Day. Beyley said it could be arranged. That’s about five weeks off. Les wants to be sure Mom and Dad will come to the Base for the weddings. They’ll get married on the same day to save the family a trip. It is about a four hour drive and not an easy ride the whole way.

“Do you think Thorn and Rose will come?” Les really wants them to be at his wedding.

Dad said, “John’s SUV will hold eight. I am sure if we are driving, they will come. But you call and tell them your plans. Then be sure to ask Rick about housing for the night. That’s too much driving for two little boys in one day.”

The next evening Les called home to tell us of a meeting of Air Force personnel. Beyley called a general meeting so that surveying could begin. He wants to devise a fair and equitable way to distribute property. Les said that he and Arlene have discussed this very thing in great detail. When Beyley opened the floor for discussion, Les stood up. Arlene didn’t want any backlash if she were to make recommendations. She’s just a Senior Airman. He told her she was being silly but he understood and doubts anyone will give him much backlash. He is the surveyor.

“I do understand, don’t I, Sis?” I had answered the phone for a change.

“Les, with all the give and take we’ve had here over the last decade, I am sure you understand. So what did you recommend? And how did it go over?”

“Well, first, I suggested that every airman get forty acres across the board just for being there. I think everybody was on board with that one. Then I suggested an additional ten acres each just for having stayed with the program since the eruption. Everybody seemed to like that too.”

“So, no one thought you were out of line, not being Air Force, to make suggestions?”

“No, didn’t seem like it. I wasn’t military and wasn’t asking for anything. That’s one thing about military, Sis. I think they’re much more obedient than we renegades. And, while they may all have thought about it, I’m sure they expect someone else to make the decisions.”

I had to laugh at that. “I hope you didn’t say that out loud.”

“Oh, lord no. I was on a roll. Didn’t want to interrupt it.”

“Then what?”

“Then I said, Not being Air Force I don’t know much about rank. I notice everyone sort of follows the rank line though. But maybe instead of allotting ground just because of your rank, you might want to consider length of service. I’m sure that when you enlisted, you figured you’d get some sort of payout at the end. But I wouldn’t know exactly how that would work. It’s just an idea.
